Tosa Inu breed is shrouded in many legends. For hundreds of years, these enormous and courageous dogs inspire awe and respect among the Japanese. Their great strength and willingness to sacrifice go hand in hand with patience and self-control. They are balanced, but full of temperament animals with outstanding social instinct.
Tosa constantly needs close contact with man. It attaches to the family members, towards whom it is always patient, protective and tolerant. That is probably where this charmingly "worried" expression of his muzzle comes from when it is with the ones it likes. In the United States dogs of that breed are successfully used also for the therapy of autistic children.
These dogs, loyal and extremely dedicated to their family, show adequate reserve and distance towards strangers.

Please note that the Tosa Inu come from Japan, where they were used to fights.
They are fearless warriors. Always sensitive, willing to defend, never unnecessarily aggressive, though. They are suspicious toward strangers. They should be kept away from other dogs, which are willing to fight, because the one that attacks Tosa always ends badly. That is why, right from a puppy, they must be carefully socialized. Like any big and brave dog they need a consistent dealing.

Tosa breed was created crossing Japanese Fighting Spitz with European Mastiffs and Bulldogs. A typical representative of the breed is big and massive. He has a broad chest and small eyes and ears for such a giant. Average snout, stop pronounced. Hair is thick and short. Most common coat is so called red and its various shades. The dogs of the breed should measure at least 61 cm at the withers and females 55 cm. There is no maximum height, so the minimum given heights are significantly exceeded.
Also worth mentioning is that they do not show any signs of overbreeding, unlike other so-called fighting dogs. They are restless, resistant and healthy. They are eager to learn and like to stay in the house. They are more like a companion for long walks rather than morning jogging.
